Yasmin Dawson
Growing up in England I have always admired the creative aspects of London, especially its innovation and artistic expression. I found myself inspired by the British Photographer Rankin. He started as a high fashion photographer using vivid colours and punchy ideas. As fame found him he developed his work into portrait photography and social commentary through his work on television. He has explored social commentary in youth culture and the influence of the Phone Camera and in particular the selfie. As he describes it, he feels the ‘Selfie’ loses the creative edge of photography. This is where I disagree and wanted to explore this avenue.
Today, everyone has a camera in their pocket. Our lives are constantly documented and shared online. Our view of the world is filtered through screens, whether that be through news, images, or social media. I wanted to explore this concept and create a visual representation. I aim to evoke introspection from the viewers and hope it influences how they perceive the world and others around them.
