Simone Chaddha
Over this course period, I have attempted to maintain a specific contemporary storyline, whether it be the story of a flower or the progression of a color scheme in a pool. Furthermore, as a dancer, I admire the purpose of having a story which heavily correlates to the inspiration for my final project. This past March, I had the opportunity to co-create the Dance In Flight show theme that was inspired by Alice in Wonderland. Moreover, my project details the journey of a girl–my sister playing the girl– trapped in a black and white tower before she falls down a rabbit hole into a world of color and vibrance. Throughout my photo series, I wanted to increase the intensity of color and prints in order to fully demonstrate how her curious spirit and immersion in the color-filled world increases.
Gary Winogrand, a renowned New York street photographer, heavily influenced the style of my photography as not only did he photograph physical streets and buildings, but he highlighted people in different neighborhoods with varying clothes, cultural backgrounds, and actions within the photos. I was heavily influenced by the specific photo from the New York World’s Fair below as it looks so candid, yet it is posed enough to clearly communicate a message of secret telling. I wanted to adopt that candid-yet-posed style in my photo series to convey the story of a girl discovering a new world by pressing her hands against the window and miming her hands out with the prints, for example. Ultimately, it was very rewarding to be inspired by Gary Windogrand’s photo style as well as the Dance in Flight show to develop this series.
