My work consists of a series of self portraits utilizing mirrors to create metaphorical depth to images, exposing the behind-the-scenes aspects like the camera itself in the mirror, and the imperfections such as debris on the mirror. “Mirror Moments” is a 10-photo story that reflects other stories, such as those told by my inspirations- Paul Sepuya and Heather Rasmussen.

Sepuya’s use of the body, mirrors, and camera to highlight the smudges and traces on the mirrors he photographed questioned what is usually the center of attention, or even in the shot at all. Rasmussen’s goal in her photography was to highlight objects, using a person as a “tool” to show her something. I tried to emulate this in my work through the rose. Both of these artists inspired me, and combining their ideas I aimed to highlight objects such as the rose and the body while exposing the fundamentals of photography such as the actual camera.
