Josephine Morgan
My name is Josephine Morgan, I’m from California, and I’m lucky enough to be living with my parents. In this work, I wanted to capture them in their home, doing things they would normally do, but make it more whimsical and fun. I wanted there to be more story to each photo while still feeling like I was capturing raw footage of them interacting with each other. I was inspired by Larry Sultan’s “Picture From Home” series where he too captures his parents in their home. Some of his photos reminded me of Wes Anderson cinematography and I wanted to emulate that in my series too. I was also inspired by Karen Jerzyk’s monochromatic shoots and I decided to incorporate that as well.
I realized later that Larry Sultan says in his statement “I want my parents to live forever” and I feel I may have ended up with more in common with him than I initially thought. I did not plan on photographing my parents at the beginning of the project but when my model fell through they were there to be my subjects in the test shots. After the test shots I knew they had to be my subjects for the final series. I wanted to capture them together in their home and have their characters shine through in a way that will last forever, and like Larry Sultan said, I want them to live forever and through these photos they will. Every smile is authentic and now eternal through this series.
