Isabella Joiner

Hello! My name is Isabella Joiner and I’ve been captivated by the art of photography since I was in high school. I started my photography journey with a basic canon camera and would just take pictures of whatever I thought looked cool. I was later gifted my Canon Rebel T6i and it is what I primarily shoot on now. As I continued to get into photography I really got into portraiture. I loved capturing others and giving them photos of themselves they could look at and feel great about. I never really got into the abstract side of photography. With this project I wanted to challenge myself so I stepped into the world of abstraction and ran with it. Also, since I was a little girl my faith has been a huge part of my life. I wanted to bring that into this project as well. My series is based on the fruits of the spirit, the fruits being: joy, peace, love, gentleness, goodness, patience, kindness, self control, and faithfulness. For this project I drew inspiration from Uta Barth and her work. Barth is an abstract photographer and uses the space around her to help convey her ideas. She uses a lot of negative space to help her photos come to life. Her series, “…to walk without destination and to see only to see. 2010”, was the series I felt most drawn to to pull inspiration from. It’s a series that is very nature heavy and I knew I wanted to focus on nature and how they can fall into the fruits of the spirit. I also drew inspiration from Alabaster Co. Their mission is to create visualizations of the Bible to help draw people in. I love how their images evoke such powerful feelings of faith and I wanted my work to do the same.

This series holds a special place in my heart and I hope it can help others connect with the Bible the way it has helped me to. My final image is one that I wanted to show the overall beauty that comes out of faith. I hope those who view these images are just as inspired as I was creating them.
