The city of Los Angeles and its surrounding areas are interspersed with hiking trails, wooded recreation areas, and parks – “slices” of nature not built upon. Spending time in these spaces, it is easy to forget, for a moment, about the sprawling metropolis that surrounds them. Fragments of the urbanized world – drainage canals, cell towers, chain link fences – remind us that the city is never fully absent during our walks in nature. As I photographed the hiking trails near my home, I began to focus in on these seemingly ever-present structures of concrete and metal. This series of photographs are a study of these moments of tension between the natural and man-made.
