We all live very different lives as students, teachers, workers, parents, and children. We each have our own experiences and unique ways of expressing ourselves. Despite these differences, at our core, we are all human beings: individuals with passions, relationships, identities, and emotions.
This idea is what I aimed to capture in my final series by spontaneously photographing people’s hands. Each image reflects a moment of lived experience, emphasizing both individuality and shared humanity. While most of the series is unstaged, my final enlarged photograph is intentionally constructed. I staged this image with a friend to represent oppression.
Although we are all human, society has a long history of mistreating and marginalizing certain groups, something that continues today. The candid images in my series show people simply existing and experiencing life. At the same time, the enlarged photograph serves as a contrast, symbolizing how societal forces can impose additional struggles on the oppressed.
