The South Bay coastline has been my backyard for over two decades. In addition, twelve years of scouting taught me everything from how to read the weather, navigate the terrain, and respect the beauty of this stretch of California coast. These beaches aren't just scenery to me. They've been my classroom for understanding how nature really works.
My photos capture the landscape that shaped who I am. Growing up here meant having these Pacific swells just a drive away to help relax me, the smell of the salt air to remind me that LA is not all about pollution, and the waves reminding me that things happen that are beyond my control.
I planned to shoot this in full color, but the conditions had other ideas. Heavy marine layers and flat light led me to black-and-white images. I am happy with this direction. The black-and-white approach strips away the extraneous detail, displaying what this coastline is really about. Without color interfering, you can see the hidden beauty of the waves crashing into the pier and sand, tides carving new channels, and the erosion that's been reshaping every cliffside.
Each image highlights what I have observed my whole life. For one, nature has its highs and lows, just as life does. In addition, there are calm and peaceful moments, but swells that can turn without warning, and we need to be resilient, just as in life. For me, the black-and-white approach reveals this unpredictable side while capturing the character that led me to document it in the first place.
This is my record of a place that taught me about persistence, adaptation, and respect for forces far bigger than I am.
