Aaliyah Calderon
My photography is rooted in the desire to preserve stories—stories of women, community,
families, identity, and the quiet strength that emerges from everyday life. Growing up as the
eldest daughter in a Latino household, I learned early on that responsibility, love, and resilienc often coexist in a single moment. Whether you are alone or accompanied by your family, photography allows me to capture the truth of those moments: the small gestures, emotiona undertones, and the memories that live in what many people overlook. This final series is reflection of the spaces and women who continue to influence my understanding of myself. Using natural elements, intentional lighting, and a blending of documentary and portrator techniques, I aim to show the complexity of adulthood and womanhood. Many of my image revolve around the themes of nature, people, and the four elements.
Photographing all four elements into one image was a challenge, as I wanted to create a single moment of growth and power that women have when they are standing alone. However, even when standing alone, a woman is never truly alone. You are always grounded to the soil beneath your feet, touched by the breeze from the ocean, surrounded by the trees around you, and illuminated by the fire of light that reflects on your skin. This series explores how adulthood and womanhood can be grounding, overwhelming, empowering, and transformative all at once. I wanted to craft moment that captures the growth, presence, and power of women who carry pride and vulnerability, strength and softness, love and beauty—all while standing in their own stillness.
Even in solitude, she remains connected to the natural world: the earth grounding her with
ancestral strength, the breeze reminding her of breath and change, the fire within her symbolizing passion, clarity, and survival. These photographs capture that union—the balance between stillness and motion, vulnerability and strength, power and softness. Ultimately, this projec honors the layered experience of womanhood and how deeply it intertwines with the natura world. My hope is that viewers see themselves within her, reconnect with their roots, and recognize the resilience and beauty within every part of themselves. Nature is one, and we are another part of the four elements—creating a fifth. Together, we help keep the world moving forward, not just as women, but working hand in hand.
