Western Waves

Ever since I was a kid, I would constantly beg people to take photos of them. My mom, sister, dad, and even dog have been frequent muses of mine. Clearly, not much has changed. I’ve been told I’m a people person and I believe that translates into my photography. My work this semester has been focused on portraiture, capturing the essence of the people I love.

For this project, I was inspired by the “coastal cowgirl” fad. I have California roots, but I’ve always been infatuated by anything Western: horses, boots, and the iconic hats. My freshman year roommate, Helena, bought a gorgeous cowboy hat with teal detailing on a trip we took to Palm Springs together. This cowboy hat hung on a command hook in our tiny dorm for the entirety of the year. I now think of her anytime I think of the coastal cowgirl trend, so I knew I had to use her as my muse. I hope these photos capture who Helena is: warm, full of life, and joyful.

For this work, I was inspired by Ty French’s “Coastal Cowgirl” series. I love the light and airy feel that Ty incorporated into these photos, as well as the elegance the model carried. The photos he captured display grace, beauty, and the coastal lifestyle.
