“Pickleball”

For the past four months I have been exploring the world of digital photography beyond that which can be experienced with an iPhone, thanks to this class. I am a student athlete at Pepperdine University, and for the past four years that fact has been the center of my life. The subject of the majority of my projects for semester have been my teammates and the places we have traveled for games. For this project, I wanted to show these Division I athletes having fun playing a sport that they are not skilled at: Pickleball. While they are used to being photographed on the field or in the gym, the pickleball courts are not where their athletic prowess is at its peak, which is why I thought it would be a very entertaining subject. Everyone had a good time and they were all very good sports about having my camera in their faces. For this series, I was inspired by Luke Goldford’s shots of Jeremy Allen White. Goldford’s use of color, his warm tones, and his inclusion of athletes and sports settings, like a gym and a field, influenced my shots taken at the pickleball courts at Pepperdine. I wanted them to have a retro almost film feel while capturing the motion of the game. In the end, I hope I exemplified the true purpose of sport: to have fun.
