We were asked to choose a famous photographer and an iconic photograph that they had produced. I immediately thought of this picture of Whoopi Goldberg in a bathtub full of milk created and shot by Annie Leibowitz. According to Leibowitz, the picture was inspired by one of Whoopi's stage routines which has a deeper meaning behind it. Before reading about the context and background of the photo, I initially felt the image displayed playful, creative, and pure positive energy coming from Goldberg’s lighthearted facial expression.
︎
Interpretation: The water slowly turns milky and the petals begin to separate as the subject immerses into the bathtub. The water represents renewal as the bathtub drain all negative energy. Accept emotions as they come and be kind to your mind. Transitions in life can be hard, but it is okay to let things go.
