In this course, my photography has largely centered around architecture and color. As a photographer I have been very drawn to color and highlighting where it occurs in everyday life. Particularly, I have been interested in instances where interesting hues are dulled by the surrounding nature. In my work, I have sought to isolate those objects to draw attention to the special elements of these items. My project, titled “California Hues,” focuses on the vibrant colors found in Southern California beach cities. With the Pacific as a backdrop to life in these areas, colorful buildings, paintings, and natural elements are common. While some objects are noticeable, some objects in these images may not stand out to the naked eye. In this project I sought to highlight these hints of color and personify them in the greater scheme of this series. I took inspiration from Vasantha Yogananthan’s project “Sounds of Silence,” particularly in how he is able to utilize color to better tell a story of a place. He has described his work as giving himself a new lens of a place in which he has prior familiarity, which is what I sought to do in this project.
