I am a graduating Pepperdine senior who has always enjoyed taking pictures on her phone, but only recently learned how to operate a DSLR camera. Photography has been such a fun skill and art to learn, because I’m capturing a real moment that will forever be frozen in time and I find that beautiful. Something I wish could be forever frozen in time is college. I wanted to pay tribute to Pepperdine before I graduate, and decided to capture one of my friends dancing across campus. One of the highlights of my Pepperdine career has been dancing on the Pepperdine Step Team- it was the first dance team I’ve been on and I learned that dancing makes me feel alive. Dancing is an art that requires immense technique but also makes one feel free, and that balance is amazing to capture. It was such a fun shoot and I enjoyed taking pictures of Amelia in her natural state across campus to honor the way this school has bolstered my creativity and knowledge.

Jordan Matter inspired this project. He is a photographer who has shot many dancers out and about in various outdoor environments like subway stations, forests and beaches. Many of the poses his dancers have done in his photos inspired me and my subject. He plays with symmetric composition, leaning dancers on objects or using the objects/furniture that happen to be around, and often captures dancers jumping mid-air.
