Everytime I start to brainstorm for a photo series, I find myself continuing going back to the concept of culture and identity. Leaving China to come to the United States at the age of fifteen has profoundly impacted my personal development and has led me questioning my identity many times. The first time I saw Sama Raena Alshaibi’s work, I was immediately amazed. Her photographs show the representation of culture or war with a strong yet beautiful presence.
“Filipino Students at Pepperdine” is a work consisting of ten images. There are nine different Filipino students in this photo series. All of the photos are taken at Pepperdine Seaver College campus. While there are many international students on campus, Filipino students organization Pilipino American Student Association (PASA) is one of the major clubs that is always hosting public events to showcase their amazing Filipino culture. This photo series, especially, highlights the pride of these students as they represent their culture on campus.
