Idols

For this project I was inspired by one of Paul Thek’s questions, “Who are our Idols?” and “Why do
they have to be human?” As I pondered over this question, I started to think of all of today’s “idols”
in our society. Who are they? How do we see them? How does the perception of celebrities affect us
in our day to day lives, and ultimately affect how we perceive ourselves? The people I picked for “Idols”
were just some of the first people that came to mind that represent today’s modern pop culture.
There isn’t necessarily a deeper meaning behind this project, except that I wanted to have some fun
and light heartedly deface some of America’s favorite idols. The process of placing objects and food
on their faces gave me a sense of freedom by warping their perception to any form I wanted. I was also
inspired by Miles Aldridge’s photography and how he uses bright colors for beautiful and fun pictures.
